Projects: 08/2004 Geomagnetic investigations

  Project:
Geomagnetic test lines to evaluate the conservation conditions of
ancient structures of buildings in the modern town of Hatay (Antakya)

Left: City wall at the northern slope of the Silpius mountain.
Centre: Entrance of the Parmenios gorge.
Right: Measuring area Epiphanea on the Staurin mountain.

  Location:
Antiochia on the Orontes, Antakya/Hatay, Turkey

  Client:
Department of Oriental Archaeology and Art of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg
Prof. Dr. Gunnar Brands, (brands@orientarch.uni-halle.de)

  Targets:
Test lines to evaluate the conservation conditions of ancient structures of buildings in the modern town of Hatay. Set-up of a digital cartography as a basis for a systematic investigation of visible and assumed relicts of ancient building remnants in Antiochia and the ancient seaport of Seleukia Pieria.

  Operations and results:

Map of the ancient city of Antiochia by Wolfram Hoepfner, state 2002.

Geomagnetic investigations on the Staurin mountain to locate the town of „Epiphanea“ and a complex geophysical prospectin with geomagnetics and GPR close to the church St. Peter at the outlet of the Parmenios gorge as well as on the expansion area Basilea within the town show completely different results.

Fluxgate-Array and DGPS at
ancient seaport.

In Seleukia Pieria which is the former seaport of Antiochias, the conservation conditions are best because since centuries this area is only used agriculturally, and the GPR measurements yielded brilliant results.

Timeslice 5 of a GPR record in Seleukia Pieria from a depth of about 1-1.5 m.
