Projects: 11/2003 Geophysical investigations

  Project:
Geophysical investigation at the Mittleren Großhartmannsdorfer pond and the Erzengler pond (district Freiberg)

Artificial ponds drained for the investigations.
(Großhartmannsdorfer pond left, Erzengler pond right)

  Location:
The artificial ponds are located in the eastern Erz Mountains near Freiberg and Brand-Erbisdorf. They were built in the renaissance to supply the pits of the ore mining industry of Freiberg with water to activate hoists and stamp mills. Today they are mainly used as drinking and industrial water reservoirs and for flood protection and belong to the mining water institution Freiberg.

  Targets:
The stability of the earthwork dams of the artificial ponds ought to be investigated. Geoelectrical and GPR measurements provide together with results of selective and direct exposures the basis for geotechnical stability analysis.

  Operations and results:
In October and November 2003 we investigated the earthwork dams of both ponds using geoelectrical profile measurements (stationary interval 5 m). The so-called Tarras walls were tested for inhomogeneities applying GPR measurments (500 MHz).
