Projects: 10/2003 Geomagnetic prospection

  Project:
Geomagnetic prospection at Tell Sheikh Hamad (Syria)

  Location:
Tell Sheikh Hamad is the modern name of the Assyrian province center Dur-Katlimmu which is situated in North Mesopotamia at the lower course of the Habur, the biggest tributary of the Euphrat, between the present-day cities of Hassake and Deir-az-Zor.

  Targets:
Geomagnetic investigations in the area of the Lower towns of Dur-Katlimmus should yield findings about the total expansion and structure of the Middle and New Assyrian administration centre and result in a kind of city map.

  Operations and results:

During field work which was carried out in September and October from 1999 till 2003 an area bigger than 40 ha was mapped geomagnetically. The total area was investigated with an array of five Fluxgate magnetometers (Förster) which were controlled by data loggers manufactured by heslab (http://www.heslab.net). The measuring profiles have a distance of 40 cm with a stationary interval of 10 cm. In addition, in October 2001 test lines with GPR were carried out on selected areas.
