Seismic surveysSeismic methods base on the propagation of elastic waves in the ground. The method requires controlled seismic sources of energy such as a weight-drop, explosives or in case of offshore prospection boomers or air guns. The sound waves are reflected and refracted when they cross strata boundaries or strike buried objects. By registering the time it takes for a reflection/refraction to arrive and the amplitude of the wave at a receiver, it is possible to estimate depth and physical parameters of the feature that generated the reflection/refraction.
